Tsuru Ongaeshi

This is my Japanese fairytale project called "The crane returning a favour."

It's about a poor young man who is also kind. One day descending the mountain he sees something fall from the sky. Apon seeing it he finds out it is a wounded pure white crane. He pulls the arrow from its wing and tends its wound and sets it free. A few days later a young woman in a pure white kimono appears at his door,she needs to the night because she is lost, and she has brought some food with her and explains her story. He parents are dead and she wants to find a place of her own in town, the young man promises to go to town with her tomorrow. However it snows heavy the next day and they stay at his house. The young man asks the young woman if she would like to stay with him, and she agrees. One day she asks the young man if he could build her a cloth loom, he happily agrees and puts it in the shed. Th young woman takes some thread into the shed with her and says "Please don't come in until I've finished." and there was a strange noise to be heard 'kii batan.... kii batan....' The next day she gave the young man the cloth she had made, it was pure white, and very elegant she tells him to go sell it at the market. That day he went and sold it and the people paid handsomly for the cloth, so he bought some gifts for the young woman. Then one day a lord bought the cloth and the young man was paid more handsomly than before, and couldn't wait to show the young woman. However lately, she had been looking sick, and weak. Her body was very thin. She as usual told him not to come in. Shortly after the noise could be heard. 'kii batan kii batan...'it sounded painful and sad. The young man ran to the shed and yelled for her to come out, but she did not answer. Finally the youngman broke his promise and looked inside to find There was a pure white crane putting it's feathers into the loom. then it changed back into the young woman "You saved me once before when I was a crane. I came to return the favour." The young man was very confused and asked "is this farewell?" "Forgive me! I cannot stay here forever, I must go!" she turned her head to the side sadly and at day break the one crane flew into the sky. The young man chased afterit desparately but before long the crane had flown the other side of the mountain...
